Subj: K12LTSP

FYI, The Dunedin Linux Users Group (DunLUG -
dunedin.lug.net.nz) will be doing a presentation on
a product called K12LTSP this Wednesday.

K12LTSP is a server setup that enables you to use old under
powered PC's in a useful manner. (The old PC becomes an "X
Terminal" and your applications actually run on a fast
central server.)

DunLUG is also working on a project to give away free copies
of Linux (Provided by companies such as RedHat, Caldera,
TurboLinux, Mandrake) but that project is not yet ready to go.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting on Wednesday,
expert or complete Linux newbie. (The meeting details are on
the website)

Subj: Complaint against MS

There are alternatives to using MS products and I for one
encourage organizations to explorer them (the NZ PCWorld
magazine has several alternatively office suits on this
months cover CD).

However, even though there are good alternatives, the
complaint is still valid given that MS tries to make it
very hard to change to non-MS products – for instance
trying to buy a name brand laptop without paying for
Windows is almost impossible in NZ.
A legal firm is also going to need to be able to exchange
documents with other MS Office users with 100% certainty
that the conversion worked correctly – that probably means
that the firm is locked into MS products for many users –
unless MS are forced to document their file formats or
allow Office on Linux/BSD.
