From: David Mill For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Alternative TLD's Based on todays article it is a good time to tell people about the dangers of another alternative DNS program, New.net. Most people won't have heard of this, but a lot of you will have it installed on your computer. Why? Because it comes with many of the popular MP3 sharing programs, like Kazaa for example. New.net offers support for extra TLD's which is supposed to be useful for when sharing MP3's. Which is all very well until you either un-install it, or it goes wrong on its on accord (happens a lot). After this, to let your computer do any kind of DNS lookups (very useful) you need to do a lot of registry tweaking, plus a re-install of Dial up Networking. In the case of Windows XP or Windows 2k, with no removable DuN (correct me if i'm wrong), you are screwed, go re-install your machine. Surely Kazaa or someone should be warning people of the danger of changing your default DNS servers and installing software like this, but wait, don't the people that install these kinds of software deserve to pay big money to get their computers fixed, pity it isn't to the music artists themselves. In summary, when installing Kazaa and other MP3 sharing software, use custom install and un-tick New.Net (and Bonzi Buddy!).Hit Reload For Latest Comments
