They say "the first victim of war is truth".
This would very much appear to be the case in the UK right now.
Is the UK at war?
Not in the sense of a military battle but there is a very real war taking place between the far(ish) left and the far(ish) right. Tensions are high and the various factions appear to be taking their positions in preparation of a very real battle, hopefully not a violent one.
On the left we have the touchy-feely types who embrace change and believe in minority rule because any majority is (in their opinion) just a mob.
On the right we have those who are far more averse to change and who believe in keeping the status quo, preserving historical rights/freedoms and that democracy is sacrosanct.
The latest conflict between these two parties was seen in London over the weekend when a patriotic right-leaning crowd voiced their support for Tommy Robinson, a somewhat divisive character leading the charge to make Britain great again.
Robinson, whose real name is actually Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, lead a rally of many thousands of disaffected Brits who have had enough of open-door immigration and what they claim are the problems it has brought to old blighty.
Robinson claims that the mainstream media is involved in suppressing the facts, promoting their own left-wing narratives and agendas, and vilifying those who are just good hard working Brits.
The left, on the other hand, claim that Robinson is a racist and trouble-maker who seeks to profit from stirring up dissent within the ranks of the population.
Where is the truth?
Well I do not know. Perhaps nobody knows for sure... this is a war after all.
Much of what Robinson says could, at least to a degree, also be applied to New Zealand.
We have a mainstream media that long ago traded the principles of the Fourth Estate for 13 pieces of silver from a government intent on pushing its own narrative and promoting one culture over another -- out of all proportion to the actual composition of the population.
This virtue-signalling collective of sell-out "journalists" and media companies have done their best to foment conflict within the ranks of what was once a happy and joyous community of "kiwis". After all, conflict attracts eyeballs and eyeballs are needed to sell ads, right?
Back to the UK and Robinson was arrested the day after the huge London rally as he tried to leave the country. The arrest was made on what would appear to be rather specious grounds, under terrorism laws.
The actual motivation behind the arrest was his contempt of a court order that forbid him from publishing anything regarding a Syrian immigrant who was involved in a schoolyard fight several years ago. That immigrant sued Robinson for libel/defamation and was awarded a six figure sum.
In an attempt to show that the media and authorities were wrong, Robinson made a documentary called "Silenced" but the courts forbid him from publishing it. On the weekend he screened that documentary to the thronging crowds at the rally and he also posted it to Twitter.
Clearly that was going to piss off the judge who had forbidden such things and might explain why Robinson was trying to leave the country shortly afterwards.
Coincidentally, a group of prominent Kiwis also created a video with the same title, also dealing with issues surrounding the freedoms that were set-aside during the recent pandemic.
I've watched the Tommy Robinson Silenced video:
(also available on X/Twitter if it's been removed from YouTube) and it seems to contain a lot of damning evidence that support claims he was stitched up by authorities and the media. However, I'm also aware that he's not telling the whole truth here. This video is very much designed to put his own perspective, not to be an objective overview of the situation, something that must be kept in mind when watching.
For example, it has been alleged that Robinson was actually good friends with the older brother of the British schoolboy who carried out the attack, for quite some time before the incident. That relationship was not disclosed in the doco.
It's also worth noting that Robinson is far from "pure as the driven snow" and has a bit of a criminal records, having been jailed multiple time for offences in the past.
However, if you read this piece by the BBC that was published today, it's very clear that the media are doing their best to paint him as a bad-guy and this only strengthens the claims made in that doco (IMHO).
It's also worth watching this rather biased video from The Sun which also, IMHO, misrepresents the events of the weekend to quite a degree. Read the comments on that video for a taste of how the UK public is feeling right now.
To be honest, this whole issue speaks to the building tensions between the public and authorities along with their allies the MSM, not only in the UK but around the world.
Social media has given people the chance to side-step the "shaping" that the MSM has previously been able to apply to the public's view of events and that is highlighting just how much distortion has been applied. The people are not having it... they despise the dishonesty and betrayal that they're seeing from the entities that they previously respected and trusted.
I don't know how this will all end but I have a feeling that things will get a whole lot worse before they get better.
Carpe Diem folks!
