Subj: .bank.nz domain

A story today reads in part

"New .bank domain drawing nearer
The creation of a new second-level .bank.nz domain is reaching the final
stages of authorisation by the Internet Society of NZ - and the whole New
Zealand internet-using community. "

What?

There are more mountain biking clubs in New Zealand than banks - why are
banks getting their own 2nd level domain? And more importantly, how can
the rest of us access this process? I rather like to unite all web sites
with photographs under .photo.nz, and and I hear the Girl Guides want
guides.nz (I'm making this up, of course, but I hope it makes my point)

Something is not made public here which allows people like me to
understand this apparently out-of-context, out-of-proportion and
out-of-common-sense move. Like, will the bank be paying ISOCNZ a huge fee
for this very specialised 'favour'?

Why is this going on without commentary from the press? Or have I been
asleep lately?

Subj: .bank.nz application

For further information on the .bank.nz application please

Also IDG has run 2 or 3 stories, plus 3 or 4 in other
papers.

IDG is incorrect however that this vote is NOT binding and
is used to ensure that the application has enough support
to carry on in the process.
