Local Music Industry Stomps on CD Copiers Copyright © 2003 to Bruce Simpson |

8:55am NZDT, 20 January 2003 A public vending machine that copies almost any CD onto CDR media for a fee of $5 has been slammed by the local recording industry.
Apparently intimidated by recording industry threats, the management of Dunedin's Willowbank Diary have shut down the machine which was recently installed on their premises. Speaking in a TV interview this morning, a representative of the local recording industry warned"the battle-lines are drawn, the next machine that comes in, we will move to take it out... I don't like it when somebody comes along and thinks they can get it [the music] for nothing. Although the machines carry a bold warning that the unathorised duplication of copyrighted material is against the law, it's a sure bet that most of the disks copied would contain popular music or computer games. The distributors have moved to reassure those who have the machines on their premises that will not be culpable under copyright law should they be misused for duplicating commercial recordings.
They also claim that the kiosks are simply doing nothing more than can
be done with a regular home PC.
