Reports submitted to Aardvark indicate that IAD has a
list of banned newsgroups which includes:
25 other groups in the alt.sex and .a.p.b heirachies have been placed at the discretion of individual ISPs.
Most surprising appears to be the omission from the "banned" list of some newsgroups which would appear to obviously breach the current laws. Just some of these groups include:
Although these groups are probably only available through off-shore news-servers at present, it might pay IAD to dop some sniffing around overseas so that they can improve their list - just in case an enterprising NZ operator decides to bring in their own newsfeed which may include such groups.
IAD have stated that the discussion of subjects which would be illegal to portray in an image or recording is legal but do they realise that the posting of binary images is not restricted to the .pictures. newsgroups?
By creating a "banned" list, IAD may have to be careful that they are (by default), thereby endorsing the content of those groups not on the list. Perhaps a public statement would be in order.
