Million $ Ideas
At last, the contents of Aardvark's "million-dollar ideas" notebook are revealed for all to see!

Boy -- it's quiet today!

The UK has a bank holiday and it's Memorial Day in the USA so the tech newswires are deathly silent.

One article that caught my eye however, was this warning published by The Register in respect to Microsoft's ongoing involvement in the UK eGovernment project.

It has strange echos of the NZ IRD's first attempt at getting kiwi companies to move parts of their tax filing on line.

Worth a read.

Bit Of A Bargain?
Just a reminder, for those who aren't aware -- The Warehouse sells computer software right?

Yep, sure does -- but it's just games and cheap repackaged shareware right?

Wrong.

Last week I picked up a copy of TurboCad Designer 2D/3D for $39 -- and I'm quite happy with it. It's not perfect but it's a whole lot of CAD for the price!

In the past I've also picked up an excellent video editing package and some trig/algebra/calculus courseware that was a great help in brushing up my decaying math abilities -- and they were all on sale at ultra-bargain prices.

Okay, so most of these software packages date from as long ago as 1998 -- but they work just fine and can't be beaten for price -- sometimes even providing an upgrade path that offers a discount worth several times more than the purchase price.

Next time you're in the big red barn, have a scrounge through the software bin, you might be surprised what you find!

Oh yea, and they've now got 700MB CDRs (20 for $19.95) and some dinky little 300MB versions there for a horrifyingly high price -- but they're so cute ;-)

Note: I'm not employed by The Warehouse, they pay me nothing and I don't even have any shares in the company -- I'm just letting you know because I thought you might be interested.

Yep, DSL Will Bust Your Wallet
Just a follow-up from yesterday's comments on the risks associated with using a DSL service that charges by the megabyte -- yes, it has happened.

I had two people email me to advise that they'd incurred extra charges against their Jetstream account which they attribute to DOS attacks -- mainly as a result of using IRC chatrooms.

Telecom -- what's your position on this?
