Subj: Win2K security evaluation

The release states that W2K has been evaluated to the common
criteria standard. This is mainly a check that the
documentation matches up with the way a system operates (its
often a requirement for systems processing classified info).

Microsofts Windows NT 4 also received a high security
rating, but it was not widely publicised that the rating was
based on a non-networked machine with the floppy drive glued
shut.

The main reason Linux will probably never attain this
accreditation is that is costs major dollars to have a
system accredited, and if it fails you have to pay the same
major dollars to have it tested again.

Subj: Whoa!

Nice to see there are now some goverment vacancies, but
isn't it a little unfair that the applications expired
nearly a month before they were even listed on the site? :|

I suppose precognitive senses are needed to land government
security jobs these days.... lovely.

Oops my bad, seems applications closed last year, 2001.
Geez thats even worse. Yes, I saw the site this morning
when it was blank.

Subj: Windows 2000

As with all smart people, I hate Microsoft. But still, to
be fair to Microsoft, they did say "commercial operating
system". To be fair to Linux, FreeBSD any other such OSes;
they do have better security and in any many cases are
desirable to Windows 2000 or any Microsoft OS. However, it
cannot be denied that under a more restrictive definition
of commercial, these OSes don't really met the grade. True
they are sold commercially however many economicists will
agree I'm sure that they are not commercial OSes if you
take a very strict definition. This may be a good thing
but it does give food for thought on Microsoft's claim. Of
course Windows 2000 is still up against OS X (assuming
they didn't say for the x86 processor or something of that
sort) and a number of commercial varities of Linux is
another matter all together...
