Subj: cost of phone connections

The difference between phone and electrical connections is that the cost
of the former should be split amongst all those that benefit from the
connections. A phone line is not just there so the farmer can call his
bank manager, it's so his bank manager, tractor salesman, IRD inspector,
brother-in-law, neighbour, daughter in the UK, local regional council
representative, plunket nurse and old Uncle Tom Cobbley and all can call
the farmer. Mind you, this sort of surcharge may be just what we need to
accelerate development of rural radio networks. I gather Apple Airport
technology, usually limited to a few dozen metres has be revved up to 15km
beams. It shouldn't be too hard to hijack a few Sky Digital dishes and
organise phone/internet links between farmhouses right out to the main
road and the nearest Jetstream node.

Subj: Telecom services to rural areas

I disagree strongly with your comments about providing
services to remote areas. All locations must be treated
equal... or as equal as possible when it comes to
installing infrastructure, who but the very rich would have
been able to have electricity if your attitude prevailed
when power was being installed years ago? There is little
need for rural to city migration these days and yet the
rural sector is being constantly disadvantaged for the sake
of a quick buck. The problem is everybody is selfish, but
most of all the city dwellers!
