Explain me this

12 June 2025

We live in a world that gets weirder by the day.

Everywhere I look it appears as if things are being run by petulant children, rather than sensible, mature, responsible adults.

These petulant children look like adults, they dress like adults and they even have the wrinkles and gray hair of aging adults but essentially they behave like children.

How did we ever get into this situation and how do we get out of it.

Let me elaborate...

Let's start with the USA...

The United States of America prides itself on being the preeminent democracy on the planet.

"Of the people, by the people, for the people" has been the catch-phrase of the US-style democracy for hundreds of years.

So someone please explain to me why it is that, in such a democracy, the US president gets to make "executive orders" that require no consultation, no confirmation and not even any agreement from any other individual or group?

Surely, the very definition of a dictatorship is where a single individual can make such decisions entirely themselves, without consensus or agreement from the citizens of the nation.

Yet here we have Donald Trump acting like a dictator whilst proclaiming that the USA is a proudly democratic nation.

There's also the fact that, based on published evidence, the US president is far from squeaky-clean when it comes to compliance with the law -- yet he is now in charge of the strongest superpower on the planet.

Colour me confused -- and worried.

Also in the USA we have Mr Elon Musk, the world's richest man (for the time being) and arguably one of the most powerful.

Surely his success and wealth was predicated on the things that the USA holds dear to its heart as a capitalist nation: hard work, discipline and intelligence?

No, sorry, wrong again.

If reports are to believed, Mr Musk is a drug-addled rogue who lives in a world where the sky is a decidedly different colour to our own. Many of his ideas are nonsensical (Hyperloop anyone?) and despite claiming to be an engineer who "knows more about manufacturing than anyone alive today" he constantly overstates his abilities and fails to meet his self-imposed timeframes for delivery.

The recent very public spat between Trump and Musk just highlights how immature and petulant these individuals are. The fact that they both now weild such huge amounts of political and financial power ought to be a sobering concern for everyone in the Western world.

How can we expect good outcomes when we have bufoons like this in control of such critical things such as the US government and major sectors of key industries?

Perhaps the only thing more worrying than Trump and Musk is the fact that the great unwashed public are simply ignoring the inevitable disaster that will unfold. We would not leave pre-schoolers to run amok with a box of matches in a fireworks factory but right now I fear that this is exactly what's happening in the USA. The problem for the rest of us is that when the US sneezes the world catches cold.

Shudder!

Carpe Diem folks!
