Should we be worried

10 July 2025

In recent days I've had quite a few emails from various people around the world.

These emails are asking me if things are okay in New Zealand.

Why this sudden concern over our wellbeing?

Apparently it's all down to media reports of significantly increased earthquake activity around our shakey isles and the worry that these are warnings of worse to come.

Are these legitimate concerns or has the magic of social media (once again) simply blown everything out of proportion?

I guess stories such as this RNZ piece have suggested that something is awry in the central North Island.

Then there are reports of a quake off the coast of the South Island, something that's further stirred up the fires of concern.

Seismic activity has been on the increase all over the world, according to numerous media reports and this is firing speculation that something significant is about to happen

Many of these swarms of earthquakes are taking place in close proximity to volcanoes and volcanic activity itself seems to be increasing in some places.

Should we be worried?

Right now, the earth's magnetic poles are moving around a fair bit and some have suggested that there is a link between pole movement and earthquakes so could we be seeing that correlation in effect?

Regardless of what's actually going on beneath the surface of the planet, it still amazes me that so many people half a world away seem to be so aware of the situation and have sourced their information from Facebook or YouTube rather than mainstream media. Perhaps this is an indicator that people are tiring of the endless war stories from Ukraine and political idiocy being rolled out in almost all nations right now. Instead, they're seeking out novel stories without the polish and theatrics increasingly found in our offical news sources.

I'll be keeping an eye on the perceived global hike in seismic and volcanic activity but I suspect it's simply coincidence (and hope I an correct). If it's something more sinister then remember, you read it here first :-)

Carpe Diem folks!
