Yes, just in case you've forgotten, it's Valentine's day again. The day when the minds of young men and women turn to romance, flowers, chocolates and flowery cards.

Of course it's also the time of year when florists and other retailers lick their lips in eager anticipation of a good spike in sales.

Believe it or not, a long time ago, before the Net was born, young lovers had to actually get out of their chairs and shop for all those symbols of affection by beating the streets.

Updated 2-Dec-2002

However, as is the case in so many aspects of our daily lives these days, the Net has made life so much easier on Valentine's day.

Now you can just fire up your PC, log in and shop for any of those little bouquets, baubles or bon-bons. But who really wants to do that?

  • Have Your Say

Why have some spotty-faced delivery boy dump a bunch of tired-looking red roses on your sweetheart's desk when you could select the individual blooms yourself and deliver them in person?

No, I'm afraid that no matter what all those online retailers are telling us, Valentine's day is not an occasion for using the Net.

If you really want to tell someone that you're simply paying lip-service to the occasion you could always send them an e-Valentines card. But how sad and cheap is someone who does that?

So, turn off that modem, smarten yourself up a bit and go do things the old fashioned way.

    Lighten Up
It's time for your weekly dose of mirth and mayhem from the pages of the world wide web.

It's good to see that the guys at Harvard University are applying themselves to examining some of the more important things about the world in which we live. Take Squirrel Fishing for example.

And if learning is your bag, don't forget to check out The South Pacific Institute of Nolledge

Worried about war in the Gulf? Well here's a very useful page packed with essential information (Flash required).

    Yes, You Can Donate
Although the very kind folks at iHug continue to generously sponsor the publication of Aardvark, the bills still exceed the income by a fairly significant amount. It is with this in mind therefore that I'm once again soliciting donations from anyone who feels they're getting some value from this daily column and news index. I've gone the PayPal way of accepting donations because the time involved in processing a bunch of little credit-card billings sometimes exceeds the monetary value they represent. Just click on the button to donate whatever you can afford. NOTE: PayPal bills in US dollars so don't accidentally donate twice what you were intending :-)
