One of the biggest news stories here in NZ this week was the passing of a bill that legalises prostitution.

Personally, I find it very interesting that the decision was made by a tiny group of people who weren't bound to represent those who elected them to power but were free to exercise their own "conscience".

So this is democracy eh?

Mind you, it's probably not that much worse than having those same 120 people forced to toe the party line is it?

The Aardvark PC-Based Digital
Entertainment Centre Project

Yes, at last, this feature has been updated again! (31 Mar 2003)

I figured that this event was as good a time as any to push my own little anarchistic political trolley into public spotlight again...

Why, in these days of cellphones, SMS texting, internet, interactive telephone systems, ATMs and EFTPOS terminals; can't we offer the voters of this country a *real* democratic system?

I won't repeat stuff I've stated before, I'll simply provide a link to the draft paper I published quite a few years ago on the matter.

NEW FEATURE!

I've decided to add some forums which I invite you to try out and voice your opinion on.

The Forums

Have Your Say

Don't hold your breath waiting for the powers that be to embrace such a system of *true* democracy -- but do ask yourself why they are obviously so averse to such a system.

Is it really unreasonable to ask just whose interests are our politicians really serving?

How do you think our politicians could be using new technology to improve the democratic process. Is simply giving them an email address and a secretary that doesn't know that you can send emails without MS Word attachments really enough?

Lighten Up
Time for the sillier, more frivolous, fun-filled and frightening part of the week. Yes, it's time to "lighten up!"

Have you ever thought of replacing the tired old motor in your car with something just a little more powerful?

Or maybe you'd like a few more knots out of your little fibreglass run-about.

Boy, have these people got the new engine for you -- and it's a diesel to boot!

If you're going to be busy on Monday night when TV One screens its "Test The Nation" IQ test, here's another way of establishing your baseline IQ. Test yourself now.

If any Aardvark readers want to share opinion on today's column or add something, you're invited to chip in and have your say in The Aardvark Forums or, if you prefer, you can contact me directly.

Yes, You Can Donate
Although the very kind folks at iHug continue to generously sponsor the publication of Aardvark, the bills still exceed the income by a fairly significant amount. It is with this in mind therefore that I'm once again soliciting donations from anyone who feels they're getting some value from this daily column and news index. I've gone the PayPal way of accepting donations because the time involved in processing a bunch of little credit-card billings sometimes exceeds the monetary value they represent. Just click on the button to donate whatever you can afford. NOTE: PayPal bills in US dollars so don't accidentally donate twice what you were intending :-)
