Just about every time I read the news or PR wires I spot some fancy new piece of technology that, its creators claim, will revolutionise our lives.

One of these technologies is Bluetooth -- a short-range wireless system that provides "Personal Area Networking" (PAN) services.

In recent times we've even seen a number of consumer products incorporate Bluetooth into their design. It's not hard to find high-end cellphones, camcorders, PDAs and other electronic devices touting this technology on their list of features.

But is anyone actually *using* Bluetooth?

The Aardvark PC-Based Digital
Entertainment Centre Project

Yes, at last, this feature has been updated again! (31 Mar 2003)

And if they are, what are they using it for?

We've all seen the Bluetooth Star Trek-like ear ornaments that allow you to use a cellphone in hands-free mode, but who really wants to wander around looking that geeky?

Perhaps Bluetooth is more sensible when you want to connect your PDA to your (or anyone's) desktop PC to transfer data?

Hang on, isn't that what the ubiquitous infra-red data port was designed for?

So, could it be that Bluetooth is a useful alternative to WiFi?

Nope, sorry -- it's far to low-powered and limited in range to provide connectivity over more than a couple of metres.

Could it be that Bluetooth is actually a solution looking for a problem?

Are we simply being told we need Bluetooth because some smart sales guys thought they would create a market that doesn't really exist?

Maybe Bluetooth would fly if it were cheaper but right now it only seems to be included in the most expensive of electronic devices.

When I bought my new camcorder I had a choice of a Sony that had Bluetooth or a Panasonic which didn't. Quite frankly, I didn't feel like paying a huge premium for a piece of technology that I didn't need -- so I bought the Panasonic.

Remember, a single Bluetooth-capable trinket is not going to offer you any extra functionality is it? You've got to have at least two before they can strike up a conversation.

But what do Aardvark's readers think?

Do you have a Bluetooth-equipped device? Do you use the functionality that this technology provides?

    Yes, You Can Donate
Although the very kind folks at iHug continue to generously sponsor the publication of Aardvark, the bills still exceed the income by a fairly significant amount. It is with this in mind therefore that I'm once again soliciting donations from anyone who feels they're getting some value from this daily column and news index. I've gone the PayPal way of accepting donations because the time involved in processing a bunch of little credit-card billings sometimes exceeds the monetary value they represent. Just click on the button to donate whatever you can afford. NOTE: PayPal bills in US dollars so don't accidentally donate twice what you were intending :-)
